The Phoenix Sonoran Preserve has been implemented since 2009. This preserve area has 54 miles of trails, beautiful scenery, and enhances the City of Phoenix’s natural environment for generations to come. The Ridgeback Trail lies in the northern section of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, and is a good hike with rewarding views.

To start your hike begin at the Apache Wash Trailhead (1600 E Sonoran Desert Dr). From the trailhead, hike north on the Sidewinder trail which will connect you to the Ridgeback trail. After 2.5 miles of hiking on the well-named, well-loved, and twisting, Sidewinder Trail; turn south to start hiking on the Ridgeback Trail. Now, pick up your feet and get a great leg exercise to climb to the summit of the Ridgeback Trail.

At the summit of the Ridgeback Trail, take a moment to snap some photos, maybe a panoramic of the abounding views, to share with your friends and family. Here, have a trail snack, hydrate, stay limber, and become familiar with your bearings, by using the trail posts. Continue on the Ridgeback Trail downhill, yet just as tough on your legs, toward the Ocotillo Trail. When the Ridgeback Trail connects with the Ocotillo Trail, take the Ocotillo Trail east to complete your hike at the Apache Wash Trailhead (1600 E Sonoran Desert Dr).

The entire Phoenix Sonoran Preserve is a treasure for the City of Phoenix as a whole. The Ridgeback Trail is one of its toughest hikes and we advise that you honestly evaluate your overall physical fitness level before trekking up this trail. To find other trail options that are more suitable to your needs, explore this website https://www.phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations or call the Sonoran Preserve Ranger Office for information (602) 262-7901.
