TRAIL DESCRIPTION

I promise I won’t make mountains of jokes about how hill-arious these trails are! Silly Mountain is an awesome place if you’re looking for fun, easy trails that are suitable for all types of hikers! One of the best parts is that there are no entrance fees. Yay! It has a porta john, two picnic tables, and a water fountain for you and your four-legged friends. There are multiple trash cans too, so you have no excuse to not properly dispose of your garbage!! This park also offers a short botanical walk, which is a perfect spot to let the little ones explore or to just to read up on the vegetation in the park. There are stone benches placed frequently throughout the mountain, so you can always grab a seat to take a breather and look out at the incredible views.

THE HIKE

High point trail takes you to the summit of Silly Mountain. All of the trails are very well marked and easy to find. The only thing I will say about this hike is that most of the paths consist of loose rocks, so watch your step.

Once you’re in the park one of the first trails you’ll see is Palo Verde on the left. You’ll want to take this to Superstition View Trail, then veer off to the right and head up Huff & Puff Trail. Yes, its name is very accurate, but it only lasts for about 0.2 miles. SO PUSH THROUGH THE HUFFIN AND THE PUFFIN, plus once you reach the top you’re rewarded with a nice bench to catch your breath on.

Once you’ve finished your fun leg workout you’ll be at Meditation Point. (If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to watch the sunrise, this is it! There’s usually little to no people there in the morning so it’s pretty dreamy.) This is a great turn around point, but High Point is only 0.3 miles further so I highly recommend treading on a little further to see the incredible 360 view at the top. From Huff & Puff trail jump over to Crest trail, and then it’s just a rocky 150 feet up the High Point Trail to get to the summit.

This short walk can be a little rough for some, so if you aren’t too keen on heights or if you have itty bitty kiddos I might suggest stopping here. You still have a killer view at the end of Crest Trail, just make sure you do whatever you are comfortable with! If you do head to the top it really is a gorgeous spot to sit and watch the sunrise or sunset from, and you can also get a great look at the Superstition Mountains. This hike took us about an hour up and down, including a few stops for pictures. If you’re wanting to make your hike a little bit longer and explore the mountain some more, then go for it! Almost all the trails meet up with each other so there’s never a shortage on mixing up your trip!

GETTING THERE

Silly Mountain is located in Apache Junction, AZ. It’s super easy to get to, which is perfect if you get lost as often as I do. If you’re coming from anywhere west of Apache Junction, all you need to do is take the 60 heading east until it ends and you’ll be able to see it on your left! It has a big parking lot, but it fills up pretty quickly on the weekends, especially around sunset. I highly suggest going earlier in the day to beat the crowd.

HIKING TIPS

Make sure you leave it better than you found it. There are trash cans and a recycle bin, so please dispose of your trash!

Bring your camera! There are great views all over this mountain that you won’t want to miss!

Wear proper footwear, and make sure you stay hydrated!
